LINTHICUM, MD, April 1, 2020— NFM Lending is pleased to honor (Ret.) Major Jeremy Haynes as the NFM Salute for April 2020.
Haynes, a native of Albany, Georgia, vowed to serve his country after watching the horrific events of September 11th, 2001 in his high school JROTC classroom. In 2004, he earned a scholarship to Georgia Military College and was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He deployed to Afghanistan, having to leave his then-pregnant wife, Chelsea, and their two children.
During a mission in Kabul on August 5th, 2014, Haynes was shot four times by an Afghan Military Soldier. At the time, Haynes was serving as aide to Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, who did not survive the attack. Haynes was evacuated to Germany, then Walter Reed Military Medical Center, where he woke up to his wife beside him.
One of the shots was to his back, injuring his spine. He suffered a severed vena cava and 80% of the nerves to his lower extremities, leaving both of his legs paralyzed. Needing multiple surgeries, Haynes faced an excruciating and long recovery. At one point, he wrote, “I WILL WALK AGAIN” on a piece of paper and stared at it every day. After months of physical therapy and with Chelsea encouraging and inspiring him, he finally stood and took his first steps in November 2014. Now, Haynes can stand and walk for short periods of time with the help of adaptive equipment.
Discussing how he kept pushing himself and continues to do so every day, Haynes said:
“I tell myself, “Hey, you have to live on for [Col. Greene], you have to live on for those who can’t be here today, who wish they were. Those who died in a foreign land. They died serving a great country. They need to be honored, and me having pity parties or saying what I can’t do anymore, I told myself, “Jeremy, throw all that in the trash.” Those guys died so you could be here, living and having the freedoms we often take for granted. God has granted you an opportunity to walk on this earth again. “
During his extensive military career, Haynes has been honored with a multitude of awards, including: the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medal, Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Parachute Rigger Badge, German Jump Wings, and the Norwegian 30K Road Mark Badge.
NFM Salute is an initiative in which one military member or Veteran is chosen each month to be honored as the “Salute of the Month.” Salutes are chosen from nominations on the NFM Salute website, www.nfmsalute.com. The “Salute of the Month” will be featured on the website with a biography and information about his or her service, and NFM Lending will donate to a military or Veteran non-profit in the Salute’s name.
Haynes was a recent recipient of a specially adapted smart home, courtesy of the R.I.S.E. program of the Gary Sinise Foundation. This home will allow Jeremy to live more independently and improve his quality of life.
“The one thing that stood out for me is those few inches in a door,” said Haynes. “For the average person it may mean little, but to me, having those few inches allows me the ability to navigate my wheelchair into my kids’ rooms; to be able to pray with them, kiss them goodnight, read them a bedtime story, and tuck them in. That itself, in my opinion, is the greatest feature of this home.”
NFM Lending is proud to donate $2,500 to The Gary Sinise Foundation on behalf of Haynes and his family. NFM looks forward to the opportunity to continue to honor military and Veterans through the NFM Salute initiative.

While teachers from elementary schools all across Bergen County have had to get creative amid the COVID-19 crisis, the Academy of St. Therese, a leading Catholic elementary school in Cresskill, New Jersey, immediately launched a collaborative mix of virtual classrooms and interactive workshops to ensure educational standards and student learning did not get caught up in the pandemic.
“At the Academy of St. Therese we are moving the curriculum forward with daily online instruction. We are doing so much more than offering “Busy Work Packets,” said Principal Glenn Clark. “Our staff quickly established a dynamic and personalized virtual learning experience for the students that meet the high educational standard of a traditional Catholic education. The feedback from parents and students has been outstanding.”
Since the day Governor Murphy announced school closings in Bergen County, the Academy of St. Therese administrators and teachers launched virtual learning opportunities across all grade levels and classrooms. The Catholic elementary school’s distance learning is a hybrid of online learning approaches such as YouTube, CS First, Google Classroom, and Zoom to ensure students are provided with a wealth of resources to accommodate great learning at home.
Every morning Mr. Clark still provides students with their morning prayer, just as he did when the students were physically present in the school. Students then receive two to three hours of live teacher instruction, and up to two more hours of interactive classroom work. These live, online group and individual assignments and assessments help gauge students’ progress with material, and tailor future lessons to meet the respective student’s learning needs. Teachers and administration can view all student assignments as they are working on them, and provide real-time feedback and guidance.
“When we shut down earlier than we expected, we didn’t want to just send children home with handouts and packets,” said Clark. “Luckily I have an incredible staff who jumped right in to develop engaging and interactive lesson plans for our students at home.”
One challenge many public school districts are working to address is students’ access to reliable internet and computers. For many students, remote learning is currently optional in the district, since there is no guarantee families have equal access to online resources. Students and staff at the Academy of St. Therese did not have those problems. The school ensured every family had reliable internet connection, and sent all students from grades two through eight home with their own Google Chromebook. Preschool through first grade learners will continue to have access to iPads and Chromebooks as needed. Mr. Clark said that the school, thus far, only had to send an additional two devices home to families.
“A quality education should never be optional,” Clark said. “The Academy of St. Therese is grounded in the belief that every student, as a child of God, is deserving not only of the finest academics we have to offer, but the encouragement, support and individual attention that a true ‘Academy’ must offer to each of its students. Our current distance learning curriculum is true to that mission.”
Mr. Clark is proud of his staff’s efforts to create materials prior to the school closure and working daily to develop distance learning content for students. Denise Nahass and Margaret Moore, Early Primary teachers at St. Therese, email parents daily lesson plans, worksheets and links to daily YouTube video lessons for learning days of the week, working on art projects, and reading books together. The Preschool through second grade teachers have also instituted, “Morning Meetings,” just as they had in their classrooms. In this way, although the children may be limited to their own homes, they get to see their classmates and teachers through the week.
The school implemented Google Classroom for all teachers and students in grades 3 through 8. This allows teachers to actively manage student activity online, and assess student performance. The Classroom app provides access to the wide array of online resources available through the Google “G Suite for Education.” Since the shutdown, the Academy of St. Therese has integrated a variety of online resources in conjunction with Google Classroom facilitating collaboration, allowing students to work together seamlessly, from home.
Prior to the shutdown, the Academy of Saint Therese was already implementing new technology into the school curriculum to bring student learning to a higher level; which helped the school seamless integrated distance learning immediately. This year the Academy expanded the Archdiocesan STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) initiative online so that every student from Pre K 3 to Grade 8, can participate in a rigorous STEM curriculum, including at home hands-on activities. Additionally the Academy began the CS First coding initiative in grades 2 through 8. The SCRATCH coding language, developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is an online curriculum that makes coding easy to teach and fun to learn in order to introduce computer science and coding concepts to all students.
For the Academy of Saint Therese curriculum, faith, community, and service are the dynamic underpinnings that breathe energy and excitement into the curriculum. Just because students are learning from home, does not mean the Academy of Saint Therese students will have to abandon their sense of community and service. For the past two weeks, students have been writing thank you letters to front line professionals helping protect the community from the Covid-19 outbreak. On Thursday, April 2, all students will dress in their school spirit wear and post pictures on their parents and schools social media pages.

With air pollution levels in Bangkok reaching dangerous levels, forcing residents to stay indoors under the protection of air filters, the country is looking at novel ways to fight the problem of toxic air quality. Among these measures include a fleet of drones deployed into the air to spray water and non-toxic chemicals designed to reduce air pollution levels.
Bangkok officials used this method as part of an experiment to determine whether drones could be used to literally spray the pollution out of the atmosphere, providing much-needed relief to air purifiers, which work harder when cleaning toxic air.
As levels of PM2.5 in Bangkok soared to more than double the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended safe limit, the government quickly announced a “code red”, warning residents to stay indoors.
But Bangkok’s air quality struggles are by no means unique. In the United States, cities such as Los Angeles, Bakersfield (NJ), and New York all suffer from regular spikes in air pollution, causing ground-level smog to form in the lower atmosphere. The World Health Organization estimates that around seven million premature deaths can be attributed to air pollution.
“Long-term exposure to ultrafine particles can induce respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It increases the mortality rates for people living in highly polluted urban areas,” points out Camfil USA’s Mark Davidson, Manager of Marketing & Technical Materials for commercial air filters and active ASHRAE member and committee participant.
People in cities with a high volume of traffic, such as Bangkok, try to protect themselves from air pollution by spending most of their time indoors under the protection of air filtration systems. Unfortunately, these solutions do little to protect people outdoors, which is why it could be beneficial to explore using drones or other experimental interventions.
The good news is that the drones were able to reduce dust particles, albeit at a modest scale of 10 µg/m3. It remains to be seen if the results can be replicated to cover a larger area and capture more airborne pollutants.

According to Meladul Haq Ahmadzai, a Global Health practitioner at the University of Manchester, says “Initially, most government leaders believed Corona Virus was contracted while travelling from abroad – now that thinking changed fast – it can be spread in the community as well from person to person.”
Ahmadzai is currently developing a website platform based on real knowledge from the World Health Organization and as well from the Canadian Public Health Agency in order to provide awareness to fellow Canadian citizens on Covid-19. The website may also be used to in alignment with the current efforts of the government to help fight impacts of Coronavirus.
In Canada, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s top doctor, said they don’t know whether self-isolation works and it will take weeks or even months to find out. For example, Italy appears to report increased cases of Covid-19 infections even during lockdown. It is the first time that governments have shut down companies and government departments worldwide due to a virus.
Ahmadzai further adds, “It should be acknowledged that in order to keep the economy running, government officials can still operate from home without having to close down their offices.”
Government leaders like U.S. President Donald Trump have been calling on people to actually self-isolate for 14 days. Meanwhile, in Canada, pharmaceutical companies are also stepping up to the plate to create a vaccine for Corona Virus and work is already underway to develop such a vaccine thanks to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s efforts.
Ahmadzai concludes, “This push for Corona Virus that is occurring all over the world, including in Canada is something that we haven’t heard of before not in theory and certainly not seen in reality.”

Riverdale, NJ — According to a study conducted by researchers at Purdue University in Indiana, certain airborne pollutants (which is where odors come from) can build up to dangerous levels in offices, so much so that they can affect worker health and productivity.
After studying an office environment for a month, the research team found that high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be generated by people simply by being in an enclosed environment. VOC emissions associated with humans and human activity include breath and sweat, as well as clothing, cosmetics, hair products, and deodorant.
According to researcher Brandon Boor, one issue creating poor office indoor air quality comes from inadequate ventilation. If an office space isn’t well ventilated, VOCs are unable to escape outside and accumulate indoors, affecting the health and productivity of employees as a result.
To monitor air quality, the team installed thousands of sensors in an office inside Purdue University’s Living Labs, along with an instrument called The Nose, which was designed to track levels of ozone (O3), carbon dioxide (CO2), aerosols, and VOCs.
The study found that the more people there were in a room, the higher the concentration of VOCs in the air. Additionally, the study found that levels of VOCs were up to 20 times higher indoors than outdoors and that proper ventilation was instrumental in exhausting these pollutants outside.
Studies have associated VOCs with health issues ranging from minor conditions like eye strain, throat irritation, and colds, to something more serious, like cancer. For offices, the most common manifestations of prolonged VOC exposure include problems with concentrating and productivity loss. Whatever the case, offices can benefit from commercial air filters that remove VOCs and other airborne pollutants from enclosed environments.
According to Miriam Diamond, a professor in the earth sciences department at the University of Toronto, the lack of ventilation increases the risk of indoor air pollution. As today’s employees spend more time indoors than ever, it has never been more important to ensure that they’re breathing clean and safe air.
“Sick building syndrome,” a condition caused by poor ventilation, is characterized by symptoms ranging from headache and stuffy nose to general discomfort. However, opening the windows to let stale indoor air out and fresh outdoor air inside can be impractical if the building is in an area with high levels of outdoor air pollution such as buildings near freeways, construction sites, or industrial zones.
“High-efficiency air filters (MERV 13/13A or higher) are designed to capture and remove a higher ratio of particles from the airstream that are harmful to human health,” says Camfil’s Kevin Wood.
When choosing to upgrade to high-efficiency air filters or add air purifiers with molecular filters, it’s best to consult a qualified air filtration professional. High-efficiency commercial air and molecular filters have operational requirements that may necessitate adjustments to your system. Avoid the temptation of installing cheap bargain filters in an attempt to address the issue. High-quality filters are your solution to assist with providing cleaner indoor air and wiser investment of your dollars. If a product is too good to be true, it most likely is.

VPN use has increased significantly over the past decade as a growing number of people face fears over online privacy. In the wake of numerous privacy scandals, VPNs, which offer private browsing, have gone from a niche product into a popular service.
According to PureVPN, more than three million people regularly make use of its software. Some data even indicates that as much as 25% of Internet users globally use VPN services, often as a way to protect online privacy and with their recent no-log audit carried out by Altius IT, one of the leading audit firm, their user base is set to increase manifold.
VPN stands for “virtual private network.” When used, a VPN can obscure a user’s IP address, in effect preventing apps and websites from seeing where they’re located and the ISP they use to access online content.
You can think of a VPN as a virtual shield between your real location and the location provided to website and application administrators.
Early VPNs gave users limited choice when it came to obscuring their IP address online. They often automatically selected an IP address from a limited pool of available options, giving users some degree of privacy but limiting their choices.
Today, leading VPNs offer a diverse range of IP addresses for users to choose from. PureVPN, for example, maintains a network of more than 2,000 global servers, giving users a total pool of more than 300,000 IP addresses to use.
These servers span the entire globe, from North America to Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and even South America. In total, PureVPN’s network includes more than 180 different locations for users to choose from, providing an unprecedented degree of online privacy.
This geographic variety also gives users the ability to target their browsing experience based on the location they choose. For example, many regular VPN users make use of VPN software as a way to access content that’s blocked in their geographical location, such as video or news.
PureVPN’s large network also answers one of the most common complaints users have about VPN services — poor reliability and speed.
Until recently, many VPN services offered private browsing, albeit with the cost of predictable, steady transfer speed. It was common for VPN users to experience reduced speeds, making it difficult to enjoy data-heavy content such as HD and 4K video.
Reduced speeds also made VPN services less useful for online gamers, who depend on a fast connection to avoid latency issues that can affect gameplay.
Currently, PureVPN states that its VPN service is the “fastest ever” — a claim that’s possible due to its extensive network of servers. With more than 2,000 servers, PureVPN can offer users the fastest connection for any web-based task, whether it’s watching a video or reading the news.
The company also optimizes all of its servers for speed, providing users with the fastest online experience possible.
As online privacy becomes a larger concern for end users, VPN services are likely to continue to grow in popularity. With its extensive, speed-optimized network, PureVPN aims to lead the way both in security, convenience and, of course, in transfer speeds.
